Description

A conditionally scarce Superb Gem with outstanding originality, this 1921 Pilgrim Tercentenary Half Dollar ranks among the most desirable survivors of the issue, certified MS67 by PCGS. Struck at Philadelphia, this silver commemorative half dollar was issued to mark the 300th anniversary of the Pilgrims’ landing in New England. The obverse presents a left-facing portrait of Governor William Bradford, clad in period dress and holding a Bible, with UNITED STATES OF AMERICA around, the date 1921 at left, IN GOD WE TRUST at right, and PILGRIM HALF DOLLAR along the lower border. The reverse depicts the Mayflower under sail above the denomination HALF DOLLAR and the dual dates 1620–1920, with PILGRIM TERCENTENARY CELEBRATION encircling the design. Sculptor Cyrus E. Dallin’s work is among the most distinctive and historically evocative in the classic commemorative series, pairing austere portraiture with a bold maritime reverse. The present example offers exceptional eye appeal for the type. Both sides display strong satiny to softly frosted luster beneath a veil of warm champagne-silver patina, accented by deeper peripheral gold and light olive-gray toning. The strike is sharp throughout, with Bradford’s facial features, costume details, and the Mayflower’s rigging and hull elements all well defined. Surfaces appear notably clean for the grade, with only the most trivial abrasions consistent with the lofty Superb Gem designation. The overall presentation is highly attractive and original. The 1921 Pilgrim is a significant issue within the early commemorative half dollar series. Pilgrim halves were produced only in 1920 and 1921, and the 1921-dated coin was created as a second-year collectible issue specifically intended to stimulate additional sales. That strategy met with only limited success. Final distribution for the 1921 issue was just 20,053 pieces, dramatically lower than the 152,112 pieces distributed for the 1920 issue. As a result, the 1921 has long been recognized as the scarcer of the two dates, especially outside Mint State. Unlike many 1920 Pilgrims, which entered circulation in quantity, circulated 1921 examples are decidedly less often encountered. In today’s market, the 1921 Pilgrim enjoys sustained collector demand as the better date of this short two-year type. With a PCGS population of just 72 in MS67 and only 13 finer, this coin occupies an elite tier for registry-minded specialists and advanced commemorative collectors alike. While not technically a key date to the broader classic commemorative series, it is unquestionably the scarcer and more coveted issue in the Pilgrim pairing, and examples at this level of preservation are far from routine. An impressively preserved and historically resonant Superb Gem, this 1921 Pilgrim Half Dollar represents a premium opportunity to acquire the scarcer date of a beloved classic commemorative type.
