Description

A coveted one-year major variety in the Barber dime series, this 1905-O Micro O dime is an especially appealing certified survivor, graded PCGS AU55+ and further endorsed by CAC. The obverse presents Charles E. Barber’s familiar Liberty head motif, with Liberty facing right, crowned by a laurel wreath and wearing a Phrygian cap inscribed LIBERTY. UNITED STATES OF AMERICA surrounds, with the date 1905 below. The reverse displays the denomination within a wreath, the legend ONE DIME at center, and the New Orleans mintmark beneath. On this important variety, the mintmark is the distinctive “Micro O,” noticeably smaller than the standard New Orleans punch. As specialists note, this diminutive mintmark is rounded in outline with thick outer walls and an oval center, positioned equidistant from the ribbon knot and denticles. The variety resulted from the use of a mintmark punch intended for the quarter dollar dies, creating the only major Red Book-listed variety of the Barber dime series. In AU55+ preservation, the coin retains considerable detail across Liberty’s portrait and the reverse wreath, with only moderate wear on the high points. The assigned plus grade suggests superior quality for the level, and the CAC approval further confirms its solid status within the grade range. Surfaces appear well preserved for a circulated example of this elusive issue, and the overall presentation is highly attractive. Traces of original luster likely persist in protected areas, complementing the coin’s honest light silver-gray appearance and desirable collector eye appeal. The 1905-O Micro O holds a special place in the Barber dime series. Struck at the New Orleans Mint, it owes its fame not to an official subtype but to a mintmark blunder that became a celebrated collectible. According to Walter Breen, the variety was first discovered circa 1912 by Howard Newcomb, the same pioneering numismatist renowned for his work on large cent die varieties. That pedigree of discovery, combined with its status as the series’ only major variety, has long given the issue a unique level of recognition among Barber specialists and variety collectors alike. Although the regular 1905-O dime had a substantial mintage of 3,400,000 pieces, the Micro O variety is far scarcer than the normal issue and enjoys outsized demand because of its fame and clear diagnostics. This piece is especially notable in the marketplace, with a PCGS population of just 1 at this AU55+ grade and only 17 finer at PCGS. With the population under 100 at this level, it stands as a notably scarce certified offering, and CAC-approved examples are particularly sought after by discerning collectors. The finest certified example reportedly reaches MS66, underscoring both the challenge and the desirability of acquiring appealing mid-grade pieces such as this. A classic New Orleans variety with strong collector following, this 1905-O Micro O Barber dime offers rarity, historical interest, and certified quality in one highly desirable package.
