Description

Gem-quality San Francisco Morgan with frosty brilliance and notably strong eye appeal for this popular late-series issue. The 1885-S Morgan Dollar represents the classic George T. Morgan design at its most familiar and enduring. The obverse features Liberty left, wearing a Phrygian cap adorned with cotton and wheat, with LIBERTY on the headband, the date 1885 below, and the surrounding legend E PLURIBUS UNUM with 13 stars. The reverse displays the heraldic eagle with wings spread, clutching arrows and an olive branch within a wreath, accompanied by the inscriptions UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, ONE DOLLAR, and the motto IN GOD WE TRUST above. The “S” mintmark below the wreath identifies this piece as a San Francisco striking. Certified PCGS MS65, this example stands in the Gem Mint State tier and presents with bright, satiny-to-frosty silver luster and a pleasing overall appearance. The strike is sharp in the central design, with strong feather and hair detail readily visible, while the surfaces show the level of preservation expected of the grade. Light scattered contact marks are present, as customary for large silver dollars, but they do not materially detract from the coin’s clean visual presentation. Both sides exhibit attractive silver-gray brilliance with subtle deeper accents at the margins, producing the sort of flash and contrast that collectors seek in high-grade Morgan dollars. The 1885-S is an important San Francisco issue within the Morgan dollar series. While its mintage of 1,497,000 pieces is not among the lowest in the series, it was described in contemporary numismatic study as a modest production for the year, and many examples appear to have entered circulation or were later lost to melting under the Pittman Act of 1918. Although quantities were once held at the San Francisco Mint and later released, the issue has long maintained a solid following among collectors assembling Mint State Morgan sets, especially those with an emphasis on branch mint coinage. As with many San Francisco dollars, quality and eye appeal vary meaningfully from coin to coin, making premium certified Gems especially desirable. In today’s market, the 1885-S enjoys steady demand as a better San Francisco Mint issue in upper Mint State grades. PCGS reports a population of 711 in MS65, with only 205 graded finer, confirming that genuinely superior pieces remain a select segment of the surviving population. This balance of availability and condition rarity gives the issue strong cross-appeal to both type collectors and advanced Morgan dollar specialists seeking a certified Gem with respected third-party grading. A handsome and highly collectible 1885-S Morgan Dollar, this PCGS MS65 example offers the combination of branch mint appeal, historic importance, and Gem preservation that continues to make the series one of the cornerstones of American numismatics.
