Description

A sharply preserved near-Gem example of a better San Francisco Wheat Cent, the 1920-S Lincoln cent in PCGS MS64RB offers strong collector appeal as a conditionally desirable issue from this popular long-running series. The obverse presents Victor David Brenner’s enduring portrait of Abraham Lincoln facing right, with LIBERTY at the left, the date 1920 below, and IN GOD WE TRUST above. The San Francisco mintmark appears beneath the date, identifying this scarcer branch-mint delivery. The reverse features the familiar Type 1 Wheat design, with ONE CENT and UNITED STATES OF AMERICA centered within a pair of stylized wheat ears, and E PLURIBUS UNUM above. The type remains one of the most widely collected in all of American numismatics, admired for its classic early 20th-century fabric and historical resonance. Certified MS64RB, this piece sits at the threshold of Gem quality and displays the attractive balance of original mint color and mellowed patina expected of a premium Red-Brown example. Both sides show pleasing eye appeal, with considerable remaining mint red blended with warm brown tones. The strike is consistent with the issue, with well-defined central detail and strong overall definition for a 1920-S cent, a date often encountered with softer impressions. Surfaces are notably well preserved for the assigned grade, supporting the coin’s strong visual presence and premium collectible status. Within the Lincoln cent series, the 1920-S enjoys longstanding recognition as a better date in Mint State, especially in higher circulated and lower uncirculated grades where demand from date-and-mint collectors remains steady. While its mintage of 46,220,000 pieces is not low in absolute terms, the issue becomes increasingly elusive in choice mint condition, as many survivors were released into commerce and saw extensive use. San Francisco cents of this era are particularly collected for their branch-mint character and their frequent challenge in attractive, original condition. PCGS reports a population of 230 examples in MS64RB, with just 51 finer, underscoring the issue’s relative scarcity at this quality level. That combination of certified near-Gem preservation, branch-mint status, and strong collector demand makes this a compelling coin for both Lincoln cent specialists and broader type-oriented buyers seeking a superior early Wheat Cent. An appealing and condition-conscious 1920-S cent, this certified MS64RB example represents a desirable opportunity to acquire a better-date San Francisco issue with solid technical merit and handsome original color.
