Description

A popular Carson City issue in pleasing Mint State, this 1891-CC Morgan Dollar graded PCGS MS63 offers the enduring appeal of the famed Nevada mint in a collector-friendly, yet unquestionably Choice Uncirculated, preservation tier. Struck at Carson City from a mintage of 1,618,000 pieces, the 1891-CC bears George T. Morgan’s classic silver dollar design. The obverse features Liberty facing left, crowned with a Phrygian cap and agricultural wreath, surrounded by stars with the date 1891 below. The reverse presents a heraldic eagle with outstretched wings clasping arrows and an olive branch, encircled by the legends UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and ONE DOLLAR, with the desirable CC mintmark placed beneath the wreath. As with all Morgan Dollars, the type combines bold federal iconography with the distinctive frontier romance associated with Carson City coinage. At the MS63 level, this example should display solid mint frost and ample remaining luster, with the moderate marks expected for the grade but an overall appearance that remains distinctly attractive. The issue is often seen with decent strikes, and collectors prize examples that balance bright cartwheel effect with clean, original surfaces. Any subtle silver-gray or lightly toned patina only enhances the visual character so often sought in better Carson City dollars. Certified by PCGS, this coin provides the assurance of market-accepted grading for a series where quality and originality are paramount. Within the Carson City Morgan series, the 1891-CC occupies an interesting position. Although hundreds of thousands entered circulation in the late 19th century and the date was long considered one of the more obtainable CC dollars, later Treasury releases revealed that far fewer remained in government vaults than many early-1880s Carson City issues. Large quantities had earlier been shipped to the San Francisco Mint for storage, and bags were released in the 1920s and again in the early 1940s, especially 1942. As a result, the issue has long enjoyed strong collector recognition, bridging historical availability with genuine scarcity in higher-end Mint State. Today, the 1891-CC remains one of the most popular Morgan Dollars from the Carson City Mint, eagerly pursued both by date-and-mint collectors and by buyers assembling sets of CC issues. PCGS reports a population of 6,838 pieces in MS63, with 5,633 graded finer. While obtainable in comparison to the great rarities of the series, the coin’s enduring demand, famous mintmark, and broad cross-series appeal ensure lasting market strength. It is not a low-mintage issue, but its Carson City origin alone secures an elevated place in the Morgan Dollar landscape. An attractive certified 1891-CC in Choice Mint State is always a desirable acquisition, and this PCGS MS63 example represents a compelling opportunity to add a classic Carson City silver dollar to any advanced or growing collection.
