Description

A popular San Francisco Morgan in Mint State, this 1891-S dollar offers the combination of bright visual appeal, strong collector demand, and the enduring popularity of the classic silver dollar series. Struck at the San Francisco Mint in 1891, this Morgan dollar displays George T. Morgan’s iconic left-facing Liberty portrait on the obverse, wearing a Phrygian cap adorned with cotton and wheat, with LIBERTY inscribed on the headband. The surrounding legend reads E PLURIBUS UNUM and the date 1891 appears below. The reverse features the familiar heraldic eagle with wings spread, clutching arrows and an olive branch within a wreath, accompanied by UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, ONE DOLLAR, and the motto In God We Trust above. The S mintmark appears below the wreath, identifying this desirable San Francisco issue. PCGS has certified the present example as MS63, a fully Mint State survivor that retains satiny to softly frosted silver-white luster across both sides. The strike is pleasing for the issue, with strong central definition and attractive overall sharpness in Liberty’s hair and the eagle’s feathers. As expected for the grade, scattered contact marks and light abrasions are present in the fields and on the portrait, yet the coin remains distinctly uncirculated and highly presentable. The surfaces are generally brilliant with only minimal toning, giving the piece a clean, original silver appearance that is especially appealing for type and date collectors alike. The 1891-S is a well-known issue within the Morgan dollar series, long appreciated as a plentiful Mint State coin by comparison to many other late-date branch mint dollars. As noted in traditional market scholarship, quantities were held in San Francisco Mint storage and later released over time, with especially important dispersals in the early 1940s that helped establish the date’s reputation as a “common date” in lower Mint State levels. Even so, most survivors show the typical bagmarks associated with Treasury-held and bank-stored silver dollars, making attractive, lustrous examples with balanced eye appeal consistently desirable. With a mintage of 5,296,000 pieces, the 1891-S is not a rarity in absolute terms, but it is a perennially collectible issue because of the Morgan dollar’s immense popularity and the strong following enjoyed by San Francisco mintmarked coins. PCGS reports a population of 4,212 in MS63, with 3,672 graded finer, confirming that while available, it remains an actively traded and highly collected certified example within the series. This is an appealing choice for a collector assembling a Mint State Morgan set, a San Francisco subset, or a high-quality 19th-century U.S. silver type cabinet. A bright and attractive certified 1891-S Morgan dollar, this PCGS MS63 example represents a sound and desirable acquisition in one of American numismatics’ most beloved series.
