Description
A low-mintage San Francisco Morgan with enduring collector appeal, this 1886-S dollar is a certified PCGS MS63 example of a date long regarded as one of the more desirable issues in the early marketplace for the series. Struck at the San Francisco Mint, the obverse displays George T. Morgan’s classic left-facing Liberty head, wearing a Phrygian cap adorned with cotton and wheat, with E PLURIBUS UNUM around and the date 1886 below. The reverse features the heraldic eagle with wings spread, clutching arrows and an olive branch within a wreath, accompanied by UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, ONE DOLLAR, and the motto IN GOD WE TRUST above. The San Francisco mintmark “S” appears below the wreath, identifying this popular branch-mint issue. In Mint State 63, the coin presents as a solid uncirculated representative with pleasing overall sharpness and satiny to softly frosted luster. The images suggest a generally well-defined strike for the issue, with strong central detail and attractive silver-white surfaces accented by faint champagne-gold peripheral toning. As expected for the grade, scattered contact marks and light abrasions are present, most notably in the open fields and on Liberty’s cheek, but the piece retains handsome visual balance and strong cartwheel appeal for a better San Francisco date. The 1886-S occupies an interesting place in Morgan dollar history. With a mintage of just 750,000 pieces, it was the lowest-mintage silver dollar struck at San Francisco up to that point in the Morgan series and the smallest production of any Morgan dollar issue of 1886. In the early decades of the 20th century, the date was considered a major prize in Mint State and brought substantial premiums, with advanced collectors and dealers viewing it as one of the prime condition rarities of the series. Later releases from storage moderated its absolute rarity, but the issue has never lost its status as a scarcer and much-respected branch-mint Morgan. Today, the 1886-S remains a semi-key better date that enjoys broad demand from Morgan dollar specialists, date-and-mintmark collectors, and buyers assembling high-grade type and set material. Certified populations support its desirability in this level of preservation: PCGS reports 2,410 examples in MS63, with 2,221 finer. While obtainable, truly attractive examples are consistently sought after, especially those with original surfaces and balanced eye appeal. A historically important low-mintage Morgan dollar from a celebrated Western mint, this 1886-S PCGS MS63 offers a compelling combination of scarcity, classic design, and certified uncirculated quality.
