Description
The 1862 $2.50 Liberty Head quarter eagle is a historically important Civil War-era issue, struck during a time when gold coins largely disappeared from circulation as the public hoarded precious metals. Produced at the Philadelphia Mint amid economic uncertainty, the year saw a combined mintage of just 98,508 coins across both the Normal Date and overdate varieties, with an estimated survival of approximately 140 examples today in all grades. This PCGS AU53, CAC-approved specimen represents the Normal Date variety and exhibits pleasing, wholly original medium-gold coloration with soft honey and muted orange undertones evenly distributed across both sides - no doubt it has excellent skin and toning for gold. The surfaces are smooth and well-preserved for the grade, showing honest, uniform wear most evident. CAC has approved just 4 at AU53 with 28 higher. PCGS reports a Price Guide values of $2,700 for this choice and historically compelling Civil War–era quarter eagle that stands as an excellent representative of a challenging and humbling period in American numismatic history. Given the low number survivors, Civil-War date, we find this representing excellent value.
