Description

1839/8 $10 Type of 1838. Off of the auction circuit since 2010, when it was last sold by Heritage during the Boston ANA Show, and was described as "...1839 $10 Type of 1838, Large Letters AU58 NGC. The 1839, Type of 1838 eagle has a reported mintage of 25,801 pieces, large for the series but small in absolute terms. The design was modified during the year, subtly changing Liberty's hair style and the shape of the bust. The 1839, Type of 1838 is thus the last date of a two-year subtype and enjoys great popularity with type collectors. Few Mint State examples have survived; AU58 specimens are also quite rare. The present coin is a pleasing near-Mint example, with sharp strike details on the central obverse devices and just a touch of softness on the stars. The reverse is sharp throughout. The attractive greenish-gold surfaces retain much of their original mint luster. A scattering of minor handling marks on both sides is consistent with the grade. Census: 26 in 58, 10 finer (6/10). From The Dr. and Mrs. Claude Davis Collection." Today, we see this exquisite specimen has since been crossed over to PCGS. The population is 8 coins with 18 finer. For thoroughness sake, the NGC Census is now 27 in AU58, 13 finer. PCGS Price Guide is $26,500. If one conducts proper due diligence and compares this coin with those recently sold at auction (specifically PCGS# 44652142 ) for 10% less, you'll soon see there's really no comparison. (Would you really want a coin with a fingernail length cut bisecting Lady Liberty's head on YOUR AU58?). Just food for thought...this one's a real keeper. Originally purchased from a Metairie, Louisiana Estate, then to a prominent Steamboat Springs, Colorado collection.
