The 1858-O Liberty Seated Half Dollar is a challenging New Orleans issue that combines a healthy original mintage with unexpectedly low modern survivorship. Although the recorded mintage stands at 7,294,000 pieces, the issue is genuinely rare today. Such a dramatic attrition rate places the 1858-O among the more elusive Liberty Seated half dollars relative to its mintage. This disparity is largely explained by mass exportation. Significant quantities of 1858-O half dollars were shipped overseas, particularly to China, Canada, and Latin America.
